Benedict Cumberbatch has reacted to criticism of Western drama nominated by Oscar, dog strength.
Speaking as part of the BAFTA film session, which took place on Friday (March 4), Cumberbatch spoke why it was relevant to explore characters such as Phil Burbank today.
However, during the answer, Cumberbatch made a specific reference to actor Veteran Sam Elliott recently from this film.
Strange Star doctor began by explaining so many [Phil Burbanks] in the world. And so that feminism can be achieved, we have to “see under a hood” character like [HE] to “see what their struggle and why it’s there”.
But before continuing the answer, the actor stopped to recognize Elliott’s controversial view of the Western ways described in the film.
“I tried very hard not to say anything about a very strange reaction that happened on another day at the radio podcast here,” he said.
“Without meaning to arouse the ash from it […] Someone is really offended – I have never heard it so it’s not fair for me to comment in detail on it – west to the west.”
He continued: “These people are still in our world. Is it in front of our door or whether it is at the end or whether it is someone we meet at the bar or pub or in the sports field, there is aggression and frustration and inability to control Or know who you are at that time that causes damage to that person and, as we know, damage to the people around them. “
Back to the original answer, Cumberbatch concluded: “There is nothing wrong in seeing the character to get to the root cause. This is a very specific repression case, but also because of intolerance for the true identity that he cannot fully.
“The more we look under the hood of toxic masculinity and try to find the root causes, the greater opportunities we have dealt with it when it appears with our children.”
The Power of the Dog is now available to watch on Netflix.
